Yes, the real anti spam system is you. You can not rely your live to machine, that rule also applied on anti spam effort, not just rely on anti spam software, rather than knowing how defend your system, your PC from spam emails. Here are some simple tips how to defend your self from spam email:

• Server side anti-spam filter.
  Why it should server side? Email using networks to transmit from one server to another, the effective way to filter junk mails is when it arrived at the destination servers or in the middle servers. It’s really useless when you do spam email filtering in your computer (client side), because destination server will never know whether it’s a good or bad email. So it becomes obvious when you flagging email at your computer, it won’t affect the email spreading mechanism. Conclusion: Select anti spam software that can do server side filtering and flagging.
• IMAP not POP3.
  What is that? IMAP is server side email protocol; in contrast, POP3 is client side protocol. With POP3 you need to download your email to read it, but with IMAP4, you can do all of email activity, including anti spamming emails in server side. Most people still don’t use IMAP, but I’m sure someday people will realize that POP3 won’t help them much to fight with spam emails.
• Have multiple email account.
  Email is easy to create and now, almost all of giant internet company offering free email in their basic services. You should create secondary and/or tertiary email account to protect the primary email account.
• Use wisely your primary email account.
  Although you have secondary email account and do aggressively flagging mails in server, but it won’t change anything if you share and use your primary mail account badly. In general, Anti spam effort is about protecting the primary email account, the most important email account.
• Do NOT use Outlook.
  Basically, you can use any email client software that will suit you best, but before that, you need to select strong software to fight spam emails. The fact is, until now outlook is not a good software that can integrate with IMAP (server side email protocol). Outlook is a well know email software with a lot of security leaks, most of beginner hacker/exploiter use outlook as their debut.
• Is web based email good?
  Simple answer is YES if the software is equipped with server side anti spam feature, without it, just leave it and forget it. Gmail and Yahoo Mail already have well proved anti spam feature.
